Prep Market





If you don’t know what PrEP market is, prep market is when children from Rangikura school get into groups, then make and design products to sell at the PrEP market.  During the process you have a budget of money to spend to buy all of your materials, or you could get creative and just use recycled materials.  Once the process is done you will be able to sell it and make money that you give back to the school. Come along and join us at Rangikura School on Tuesday 13th  of December.  See you there!!

Book Review

What I liked Best?
What I liked best was all the characters were well drawn.
What I didn’t like?
There was nothing in the book that I didn’t like.
Favourite Character and
Why?
My favourite character was Shampoozel because she was the main character and I just love how long her hair is and the bright blond.
Would I recommend this book?
I would recommend this book because it is funny and very interesting and I would give this book 5 stars.

Olympic Artwork

This term Room 10 has been working hard on an olympic artwork with all sorts of different learning activities, such as my tessellation as my background,  olympic vocabulary as my border,  similes and metaphors in the speech and thought bubbles, and my head on my favourite athlete (Serena Williams).  

First I will talk to you about my tessellation. If you don’t know what tessellation is, it means when two or more polygons make a repeating pattern with no gaps or overlapping.  The polygon that I used was a triangle that measured 3.8cm on each side so it could be a regular polygon and with my regular triangle I made a hexagon and a square out of it.

Then we got on to our similes and metaphors.  Here is an example of a simile and a metaphor that I used: She was as powerful as lightning hitting the tennis ball.  Her world was her stage hitting the tennis ball. Can you figure out which is which? What one is a metaphor and which is a simile?

Next I’m going to tell you about my fantastic vocabulary border.  Around my border is some olympic vocabulary like the three values which is Excellence, Friendship and Respect that all olympians demonstrate at the olympics.

Now last but not least my olympion.  The olympian that I choose was Serena Williams and she is a master at tennis games.  She is my fav athlete because she is powerful when she hits the ball and she is a really fierce tennis player and that is why I chose her.

Finally, this wonderful artwork is hanging over our heads in Room 10.

Hong Kong STEM Challenge

Our Materials:

Here are the materials we used:
6 x long sticks
1 x  wooden square
2 x pipe cleaners
2 x straws
1 x 1m ruler
11 x plastic cubes
1 x bunch of popsicle sticks
4 x wooden small flat pieces


Challenge #1 - Build a structure with a cube as the base:

Challenge 1 was really hard because we had to focus on balance which was really hard on trying not make it fall or else we would have to keep on making and it would waste a lot of our time but I really liked how it turned out in the end.



Challenge #2 - Build the tallest structure that you can and your base can be any size:

Challenge 2 was interesting because it really mattered on height and because it kept falling down we had to do a lot of talking, conviction and also took a lot of teamwork which would make it a lot easier for us to make it quite tall.  Then that’s where we thought about the straw connecting it to the pipe cleaner to make it even longer that what it was before.         




Challenge #3 -  Build a structure with something that balances off the side of it:

Challenge 3 was really weird because we were being really safe of what we were doing when we made our first one then we had a conversation with Miss H about it sticking out the side so we loosened up and got creative and I’m really happy with our finished product.

Moment In Time Week 7



Today our teacher asked us to write a ‘Moment In Time’ piece using a picture of a boy in the water.  We planned as a class to make sure we had the 5 W’s and the 6 Senses.  

Before we began our writing in small groups we discussed the importance of using descriptive writing, using similes and metaphors where appropriate, using dialogue and have done our best to make sure our punctuation is correct.  Some of us have even used ‘Show Don’t Tell’ in our writing to provide our reader with more of an experience.

Our teacher gave us 10 minutes for each paragraph and then 10 minutes for editing at the end.  We had so much fun working together!

Boy Overboard!

Jack and his Father went fishing, Jack looked down into the water to see if he could see some fish, his dad pushed him off the boat,  he splashed into the water and was gasping for breath, then suddenly he saw a shark swimming toward him.  His foot got caught into a net and all Jack could see was the sharks surrounding him “AHHH!”  screamed Jack.

As Jack was in the water he could see his Dad driving away in the boat.  “HELP!” Jack cried “HELP!” nobody could Jack’s lonely voice, his heart was pounding like the waves crashing against the rock in a storm.   It was like his Dad left in a blink of an eye one minute he was there, then 30 seconds later he was gone.

The sharks came back for more surrounding Jack in the deep blue sea, Jack tried to swim away but the sharks followed him from behind.  Jack tried to swim faster and faster as one shark from behind tried to take a chunk of meat out of Jack’s leg, Jack dodged the shark like a fish getting hooked by a fisher men.

I think that it was fun working with my buddy Kyara because we both had different ideas to share with each other and to gather all our knowledge and I also learn more vocabulary from her.   

Kyara:
I think working with my buddy (Mya) was great and fun because she has ideas, we both share our ideas before we put it on our writing. When we put our ideas on our piece of writing, we also put a some similes in.

Moment in time

The day Mike almost died.


One hot summer day the sun shined bright like a disco ball.  Mike invited his friends, Josh and Phill to go play ball tag at the park.  They were about to have Fish & Chips for lunch Mike said that he could smell the Fish & Chips from miles away.  They played a game of ball tag then the Fish & Chips arrived.  “Yesss! The fish and chips are here”.  Phill was very quiet like a mouse he only laughed a bit.  Once they ate they played ball tag again, Suddenly Josh through the ball and it hit Mike’s face, Mike’s nose started to bleed and phill rushed over to Mike like a cheetah with tissues “are you ok Mike”  asked Phill. Mike didn’t replied, Josh stood there in shame tears slowly dripped down this face.

Finally Mike woke up asking Phill “what happened Phill, What happened” asked Mike in a shallow voice.  He was waiting for an answer from Phill... Phill finally answered “Mike Josh through the ball at you and you have been asleep for almost a hour and a half” replied Phill quietly, a slow tear dropped down Mike’s face he looked at Josh with mixed emotions.  Josh looked guilty he ran up to Mike and said “sorry” Mike didn’t reply.

Matariki Reflection




Matariki is a time for reflection. Yesterday with Whaea Toni we took the time to reflect on our year and set a new goal. Here is the goal that I set:

We made a Matariki star. We used our algebraic thinking we had a pattern to follow:


1,2 and down 

1 and up

We repeated this pattern until we got the Matariki star.

Matariki Celebration

Every year the māori people have their Matariki new year.   Matariki is the māori new year in early June or late May.



Here are some ways that the māori people celebrate Matariki : They have feasts ,Pukana Challenge, Kāpāhaka, Powhiri to make people feel welcome, Play knucklebones, Storytelling, Weaving, making manu tukutuku ( kite making ) and many more.
To celebrate Matariki my whole class made manu’s. Then we had a discussion about of what tikanga means and what I have learnt about Tikanga is that it means why we do what we do and how we are going to respect it.  So once we had our buddies we had to collect our materials before we went to collect natural materials we had to say our karakia (prayer) first, then we cut our natural materials.   

We had to have buddies my buddy was Earia.   We used toetoe, wool, Harakeke and a black piece of paper for the top. Before we even get on with that we had to use our maths knowledge and find out how long the whole toe toe was and how to split the toetoe into three equal pieces, to get both sides of our manu and the middle.  The full length of our toetoe was 120cm long and then we  split it into our three equal parts once we got our pieces of our toetoe then we put them into the shape we wanted it in.  Then we tied the top of our manu with the wool then we got the the pieces that we needed for the lines in the middle of our manu then we had to go criss cross and around and keep adding the strips of our harakeke.   Once we finished weaving it we just had to add the paper on the top we decided to draw korus at the top of our manu and colour it in with blue purple and green and went with white on the outside. Then we just added some hot glue at the back of our manu Tukutuku.


The easiest part was probably the weaving part and the Hardest part was how we had to tie the top of the manu with the wool.  What me and my buddy need to work on is nothing and what me and my buddy done well was working as a team.  What I need to work on is saying how I worked it out using my maths knowledge.  I really had a fun and awesome time making my manu with my buddy Eraia.

Harakeke



Purpose: inform (share our knowledge and facts)


Here is some information about harakeke you might not know. Harakeke is also known as flax and flax is often found in a garden. Before you do anything  with the flax say your karakia/prayer first. Don’t cut the harakeke in the rain, cut it when it is sunny. Something else you should know about harakeke, is that you can only cut it when it has finished flowering.  Also don’t cut the three middle ones which are the rito (baby) and the Awhi Rito  (parents).  Another thing you should know is to cut the leftovers of flax into small  pieces and place them underneath the bush so that it can help the other pieces of flax grow again.

Mya's art work

In term 1 we learnt about Maanakitanga,  Whanaugataanga,  our identity,  our mihi and how to share our art in words.   It took 9 weeks and now we have finally finished it. 

 Maanakitanga means that I will show  kindness,  caring and hospitaly witch leads to Whanaugataanga.   Whanaugataanga means a sense of belonging to a group and joining in.  

My mihi is sharing with people my background witch is my teacher,my principal and many more.

Weaving

 Equipment:
scissors
ruler
paper
sellotape
pen /pencil

1.  Gather all your equipment so you are ready to start.
2.  Measure 10 strips of paper 1 cm wide and 30 cm long.
3.  Cut out the 10 strips of paper.
4.  Place 5 strips on the mat next to each other about 2 cm width apart.
5.  Grab a strip and weave it through the strips on the mat.
6.  Repeat step 5 using the 4 strips remaining.
7.  Once step 6 is completed carefully push the strips closer together until they meet and the inside makes a square.
8.  Sellotape each corner to help keep the strips in place.
9.  To make the sides of the box fold the outside strips back over the base (to keep the sides straight fold the strips using the line of the base as your guide.)
10.  Cut out 4 strips that are 24 cm long and 1 cm wide .
11.  Take one strip and fold it into 4 quarters.(to give it 4 corners)
12.  With the same strip weave it through the 4 sides (keep it tight)
13.   Selotape each corner to keep the strip in place
14 .  Repeat step 12 and 13 for the 3 remaing strips
15.  To finsh the box make sure you fold over any strips sticking up and tape it down.

Whanaungataanga

My Loving Family.

Whanaungataanga means a sense of belonging to a group. And my art work describes my family. So the little koru's represent me and my brother and sisters, the medium sized koru represents  my mum and the really big koru represents my dad.  All of the korus have to be touching so none of them are left out.
